Do guns kill people or do people kill people? This question is prevalent today regarding  the public shootings happening across america.

We all know about the school shooting in Parkland, Florida that occurred on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Due to this tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school, many people want gun control, many people want new laws in place to control the buying and selling of firearms but the second amendment of the United States Constitution reads, “ well regulated militia, being necessary the security of a free state, The right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Now a days since our country really has no need for a militia the amendment just states that the people can own weapons.

This is fine because we as a people need a way to defend ourselves, but defense is not what people like the shooter of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School think of when they think about guns; and now after that horrible ordeal, now everyday people think that as well.  5 out of 6 people interviewed said that guns are used to hurt others rather than for protection.

This causes Americans to look at the necessity of the 2md Amendment to not be removed but altered to meet the ever changing country. Even though the public shootings are what is on everyone’s mind, we also should look at another fatal tragedies related to the gun issues, suicide.

Many Americans each year commit suicides; out raking the number homicides in the U.S., 2 to 1. There was an estimate total of 40,000 suicides in 2015; over half of those deaths involved a firearm. With the lethality and quickness of these weapons, there is hardly any chance of saving these lives, when all that probably needed was support in the first place.

We expect the government will handle all of the nations problems without bias and only have the nation’s best interest in mind, and not have the interest of businesses and organizations; no matter how successful they are. Though that does not seem to be the case due to the hesitant to approach that Republican Party is taking towards the shooting in Florida.

There needs to be changed, someone, somewhere, needs to do something.
