Homecoming week was very exciting, especially spirit day. Students rang as they walked down the hallways with their unique mums on. Many students from all different grades displayed different mums, some big, some small. Other students had different stories and traditions on mums and homecoming, especially freshman Kristen Gutierrez.

Gutierrez, a freshman new to high school participated in Spirit day by wearing a small mum.

“It was spirit day, I wanted to contribute to it. It was my first year that I was able to wear one, so it was special to me,” said Gutierrez.

Although many students participated in spirit say by wearing mums, many did not. Many students didn’t understand the concept of mums or why people like them. New senior Iris Silva, didn’t participate in spirit day or have nice things to say about them.

“They’re all the same and annoying, they sound like a stampede of farm animals in the hallway,” said Silva.

Traditionally mums are different from freshmen to seniors, they’re usually small and progressively get bigger throughout the student’s high school years.

As expected Carolyn Martin, a senior had one of the biggest mums on spirit day, she said it “symbolizes my spirit for my school.”

Carolyn knew a lot about the traditions on mums and the importance of them to high schools all around.

“They’re family traditions if you go to a high school and they have homecomings they have mums. It’s basic traditions, high schools have a whole wall of mums starting from 19-something to today,” said Martin.
